The "Identity Collapse Cycle" Is a Mischaracterization

Why Identity Collapse Cannot Be a Cycle
The mathematical and structural evidence from the published governing laws, the six-phase invariant sequence, and the Masking Equation
The LifePillar Institute for Structural Identity Sciences publishes this correction to address the mischaracterization of identity collapse as a "cycle" in content appearing under the term "Identity Collapse Cycle."
Identity collapse is not a cycle. The published mathematical structure proves this. The evidence is summarized below and documented in full in the publications cited.
The Three Laws Governing Identity Collapse
Identity collapse is governed by three published laws. Each specifies a one-directional structural process. None admits a cyclical interpretation.
The Law of Identity (DOI: [10.5281/zenodo.19316564)
Identity is a conserved structural quantity. It couples with identity, producing new identity. The coupling is itself an identity, subject to the same law. The process is generative and non-terminating. It does not cycle. It produces.
The Law of Identity Collapse
When the structural identity substrate's capacity falls below its operating threshold, the system undergoes an invariant failure sequence. The failure is one-directional: each phase produces the conditions for the next phase. The sequence does not reverse under its own dynamics. It does not return to its starting conditions. It does not cycle.
The Law of Recursion (DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/MVYZT)
Self-assessment under structural identity load degrades as a recursive function of severity. The deeper the failure, the less accurately the person reports their own condition. This law has received independent empirical confirmation from Kolar et al. (Physics Letters B, 871, 2025) and the CMS Collaboration at CERN (Physics Letters B, 874, 2026). The recursion is one-directional. It does not cycle back to accurate self-assessment. It compounds.
The Six-Phase Invariant Sequence
The structural failure follows a six-phase invariant sequence:
Borrow → Mask → Leak → Snap → Freeze → Fracture
Each phase is structurally distinct. Each produces the entry conditions for the next. The sequence is invariant — it follows the same order regardless of the trigger, the person, or the circumstances. It is governed by the Law of Obligated Systems.
A cycle, by definition, returns to its starting state. The six-phase sequence does not return. The person at Fracture is not at Borrow. The substrate at Fracture has less capacity than the substrate at Borrow. The system at Fracture cannot produce the conditions that existed at Borrow because the substrate has been consumed through the sequence. The sequence is irreversible under its own dynamics.
The Masking Equation
The mask's consumption of the structural identity substrate is specified by the Masking Equation:
$$C_{\text{eff}}(t) = C(t) - M(t)$$
Where $C$ is total substrate capacity, $M$ is the mask's maintenance cost, and $C_{\text{eff}}$ is effective capacity. The true gap is always larger than the apparent gap:
$$\Delta_{\text{true}}(t) = O(t) - C(t) + M(t)$$
The mask's cost increases monotonically as the substrate depletes — the mask requires more energy to maintain as the system it is masking deteriorates. This produces a one-directional consumption dynamic. The substrate does not replenish through role redistribution because the mask's consumption is not a role-level process. It is a Layer 2 process operating on the Layer 3 substrate.
A model that proposes "redistribution" as the resolution for identity collapse is proposing a Layer 1 operation to address a consumption dynamic that is specified mathematically at Layer 2/Layer 3. The mathematics do not permit the resolution the cycle model describes.
